On the eve of the Civil War, the mixed race Appalachian community known as the Melungeons face continuing exclusion and discrimination. They are led by "the king" - who does his best to keep his community in line. Even so, the group's members express their aspirations in increasingly conflicting ways. As the State of Tennessee moves towards secession and war, tensions erupt as opposing ideals and ambitions lead to intrigue, betrayal, and murder - as the King of the Melungeons feels his once iron-clad grip on the community slipping away.
